BOT (Beginning Of Transmission):
Aloha Ahi Ahi UFOhana,
Only a few days left in this year, in fact we only have one Vanikapila left, coming up this Saturday. We’re going to make a little special by having a little PHP (Pau Hana Party) after the Vanikapila. Please register here if you’ll be joining us and what kind of little FF (Finger Food) you’ll be bringing to share with your UFOhana.
Speaking of Foods and Saturdays. Mahalo Nui Loa to the intrepid few that braved the dark, freezing, foggy night to attend this past Saturday’s USPJPL 2024 Party.
It always amazes me that no matter how small the UFOhana Gathering, we all manage to have a fabulous time and a great dinner! Click below to view Images of that fun night.
Mahalo Nui to Nohea and Pauline for dressing up Vendola Cafe for the Holidays!
Some sad news from our ‘Ohana member, Ethan Hay . . .
Aloha Del and Nohea, and Jake,
Hope this finds you enjoying the holiday season (after the storms!). Looking forward to being with everyone at the Pau Hana on Saturday the 28th, and at the Academy of Sciences on January 1st. Is it 2025 already? We are already through one quarter of the twenty-first century – it’s like living in the future!
For the Pau Hana, I would like to bring cookies.
I thought I would share with you and the ohana that my mother died this week, on December 17th in Tucson Arizona, age 94, of injuries sustained in a fall. She lived a strong, full, independent life.
Born in Peruwelz, Belgium, of the French family CAPON, my mother Thérèse was the last of four siblings, and is survived by my brother and I, four grandchildren (all US citizens), and literally dozens of cousins, nieces and nephews residing in France and Belgium.
Thérèse lived an adventurous life. The family left their ancestral home at the outset of World War Two, and lived in Saint Brieux, Bretagne, during the German occupation. After the war, the family returned to Belgium. Thérèse went to nursing school in Chamonix, in the French Alps, and emigrated to the US as a governess to the family of William Primrose, a classical violinist. She met my father, Peter Hay (d. 2008), in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where they married and raised our family.
She loved to travel, and visited Puerto Vallarta annually, since two years before Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor filmed The Night of the Iguana on location there. When she turned seventy-five, Thérèse traveled to Macchu Picchu, Peru. She loved to sew, and to cook local cuisine, especially sea food, loved to fish, and was always interested in finding local shellfish, from San Francisco Dungeness crab to shrimp in Bretagne to cultivating escargots for the table.
This year, the local crab fishermen are anxious for the season to start, and not too pleased when they are told it is still whale season at the Golden Gate, risking entanglements. One beautiful thing, from inside my boat in Sausalito, I have been listening to the whales singing at night. It has been an extraordinarily vivid choral concert.
All best wishes to everyone,
– Ethan
PS – Attached photos of the redwood branches that fell through my patio the morning of our Fairfax performance. You can see why I was a little rattled.
Our condolensces on your loss Ethan and thanks for sharing the wonderful stories of your Mother, her adventures, and the Whales. Good luck with the storm repairs.
And don’t forget, we already have activites lined up for early next year. We have the Academy performance on the 1st and another faulous house concert from JJQ Band below.
You can sign up for these two events oonnnnnnnnnn . . . that’s right our events page which is here . . . https://UFOhana.org/events. Easy enough to find right?

Btw, if you’re not busy some quiet night this week, consider jumping in your car, drive by Vendola Cafe, and give us a “toot, toot” of approval or knock and say Aloha. There may be some hot Cocoa or Coffee in it for you?
And finally, the link to our last Vanikapila / Pau Hana Party of the year. Click here to register for IRL.
Wishing you all peaceful and joyful holidays,
