031716: Kanikapila at UFOHQ This Friday and Saturday

BOT:

Aloha UFOhana,

Hope this finds you well. We’re at the UFOHQ this Friday 7pm – 10pm, BYOPotLuck,  don’t forget we’re still in celebrating St. Patricks Day mode,  just in case BYOGear and of course, BYAloha. Saturday Kanikapila will be held at UFOHQ as well, 2pm – 4pm. Email me at kaleikoa@piko.ws if you need directions to HQ.

Before we move onto other business, I have a little bit of bad news to share. Nohea just alerted me to the loss of one our Senior UFOhana Pilots, Cyril Richard “Dick” Daunt, who passed away March 7 from an aggressive cancer. Dick frequented our Saturday events . . . he first discovered us at the Sleeping Lady Café. Click image below for his Obituary. Please send your Aloha and good mana to Dick’s family . . . Aloha oe Likeke . . . ‘Ole Lani A Hui Hou , , ,

I want to send a big Mahalo Nui Loa to Betty Ann Bruno and members of her Halau (who drove all the way from the Island of Sonoma), Kumu Lynn Roth and her Halau, and group of intrepid members of the UFOhana that braved the weather this Sunday. Thanks to you all and 101 Sports, we were able to help with the Blessing of He’e Nalu Canoes. Images from that event below, click collage for album . . .

The Saturday Kanikapila before (see below) was a little drier and warmer . . . Btw, Brudda Ted, can you play bass this Saturday?

Last Friday we celebrated our 16th Year (1,144th) Kanikapila at the Elks! Even Aunty Ku’uipo (97 years young) was there to celebrate with us.

030816: Kanikapila #1144 this Friday at the elks!

BOT:

Aloha UFOhana,

We’ll be holding Kanikapila and celebrating our 16th Anniversary at the Elks this Friday, 7p – 10p, Joe Tato says there’ll be a dinner provided for a nominal fee, no menu just yet but as usual it’ll be ono-licious. Mahalo Joe and the Elks for hosting the UFOhana once again.

Now 16 years may not sound like much. But consider that we’ve had a kanikapila almost every week for the last 16 years, add to that the Saturday Kanikapila we’ve start having for the last 5 years, that adds up to One Thousand One Hundred and Forty Four kanikapila in the last 16 years!  Yes,1144, give or take a few vacations and extra events, besides it’s kind of a nice semi-symmetrical number. I found a few others celebrating their Birthdays this Friday: Lawrence Welk,  Bobby McFerrin, Jessie Jackson, Jr. , so I guess you could say we’re in good company?

Here’s what went on last Friday at the UFO HQ . . .  (click collage for album) . . .

Last Saturday we met at UFO HQ. . . Aunty Ku’uipo flew up from Southern CAL and graced us with her wonderful Hula. We also had guests (Fran and Jim) from Oregon and beyond.

1-030516 Saturday Kanikapila

This Saturday’s Kanikapila will be held at the UFO HQ. Usual time 2p-4p.

Btw, if you have time before Saturday Kanikapila, or driving in from Petaluma and beyond, Brudda Ted might be needing some help at their Lokahi Canoe Blessing at the Petaluma Marina. I think they’re starting around 11am. Drop by if you have time strum few with Brudda Ted and help wish Lokahi a great season.

Since we’re on the topic of Canoe Blessings. . .

Sunday we’ll be at the He’e Nalu Canoe Blessing.  Yes, we’ve been ask to participate in He’e Nalu’s Canoe Blessing Sunday March 13th. I believe they’ll be starting around 9:30-10am at 101 Sports in San Rafael, just across from San Rafael High, so come on down. Bring a little Kau Kau to share and some Aloha to wish He’e Nalu (of which Brudda Napli Bob is a member) a great season. Kumu Lynn Roth will be performing the Blessing and Betty Ann Bruno and members of her Halau, Hula Mai, will be celebrating right along with us. Again, this is all weather permitting . . .
