042016: WE’RE AT THE UFOHQ THIS FRIDAY AND SATURDAY

BOT:

Aloha UFOhana,

We’re almost there Uke Pilots! Just over the mid-week hump and sliding into another Ukulele Weekend. Starting with Friday Night. We’ll be running 7p-10p. BYOPotLuck, BYOGear (Music Stands and Chairs just incase) . . . oh, and you know that ‘thing’, the one that starts with an A, is Low in the middle and ends with a HA! Wink, Wink!

Saturday Kanikapila will be held at UFO HQ as well 2p-4p. BYOBeverages and Snacks if you like.

Speaking of that ‘thing’, here’s something I’d like to share from Brudda Napili Bob while he was in vacation in Honolulu a while back. There are elements from this message that resonate with who we, the UFOhana, are. Mahalo to Napili Bob for sharing this with us:

Let’s try this again…

Aloha,

Yesterday, I was fortunate to race with the IMUA ‘One Blade’ Canoe Club in a 6.5-7mi race on some big ocean swells along the Honolulu waterfront. Lots of water in the canoe…heavy bailing. Incredible steersman!!! What a rush!!! This group made me feel like I have known them and been friends all my life…

After the race and lunch, I was invited to participate in a very emotional ceremony where 4 canoes paddled out with the ashes of 68 people who bodies were donated to Univ of Hawaii medical school. The families were lined up on the jetty as a bag piper played “Ma ke Aloha” which we joined in singing as we paddled by…one of the deceased was a former motorcycle cop…there were 10 motor cops that tweeted their lights and sirens as we went by saying goodbye to their brother.

We then got in a circle and scattered the ashes in the water, followed by the laying of hundreds of flowers into the circle…then we raised our paddles, sang “Ho’onani” or the ‘Doxology’, did a Hawaiian chant and paddled in a circle two times…then we lined up side by side and as we reached the end of the jetty on the way back into the canal we sang “Aloha Oe” with the families for their loved ones.

It was an overwhelmingly emotional experience. (I have tears running down my cheeks as I am writing this!!)

The true ‘spirit of aloha’ was flowing everywhere! All in all, my first day is going to be hard to beat!!

A hui hou kakou,

Bob

We were joined by the Sonoma Hula Babes, treated to a hula by the Kane Hula Hui,  and a new Hula,  by Kilani to Hawai’i 78 and met a neighbor and her daughter. Not a bad start to a weekend?
