BOT:

Aloha Ahi Ahi Kakou,

Good Evening everyone. Here we are at the Eve of Da’ Eve. Hope you’ve all been well and healthy. I’ve been relishing being able to sleep in as I’m off this week.

Mahalo for those of you that tuned in last week and to the one intrepid individual that parked her little car near the fence and played with us from the safety of her automobile. Clever Girl! I actually cranked up the amp a little bit more, just in case someone did show up. No worries, I wasn’t playing Gilligan’s Island theme on an endless loop like that Orange County Couple.

Anyway I was so inspired by the “cyber turn out” last week that I decided to update our 2020 Winter Flight Manual, which is now at V1.1. Click here to download the latest version.

I changed keys in Po La’i e to F (something more singable for guys), added the English lyrics, so we can all sing both (or at least one of the) versions. I also added, “Catch the Wind”, “My Hawaiian Christmas”, added the missing chord to “Holly Jolly Christmas”, made as many of the songs “bigger” for easier viewing for those of us with Senior Eyetus, and added a juicy, jazzy version of “Deck The Halls”, fresh from this afternoon’s James Hill Ukulele Jazz Lesson. I’ve included the YouTube link in the song for your learning/playing pleasure. Don’t be intimidated by the chords, there’s actually only 3 “Chord Shapes” in the entire song (actually 4 if you’re brave enough to try the optional D7). He uses what he calls Chord Twins, much like he’s done in “Sway”. I highly recommend that you go through the lesson, he does a great job of explaining the concept and techniques of playing Jazzy Ukulele. If you like it, you should consider signing up for his Online Booster Ukulele Lessons. He’s not only a virtuoso Ukulele player, but an excellent teacher as well. Plus you’d be supporting an Ukulele Artist who actually performed and taught here at the UFOHQ.

I almost forgot, “My Hawaiian Christmas”, which was sung by Dennis Kamakahi in the key of B, the bane (along with Key of E) of every Ukulele player (especially those without a capo that is), so I transposed it to C, just half a step up from B. Click here to play the MP3 (which I also transposed through the magic of technology).

Mahalo to Nohea, Sandy and Ralph for helping with the “heavy lifting” last week. Couldn’t have done it without you!

For those of you interested in the Great Conjunction.

The Great Conjunction. No, it’s not an uninflected linguistic form that joins together sentences clauses, phrases, or words! In this case it involved two Gas Giants . . . never mind.

Click below to join in our Virtual After Kalikimaka Hoolaulea (Christmas Party) this coming Saturday. We’ll be playing from our 2020 Winter Flight Manual V1.1, so download that new flight manual now!

  1. I missed this on the 24th so I’m watching and playing along on the 26th! -it’s still great to catch the Ohana vibe and play along in Flight Manual V1.1..
